I'm having trouble using a streaming app feature

This article helps you fix issues with streaming apps on your Roku device, like captions, your watchlist, autoplay, or sign-in. Most of the time you can fix it by checking the app's settings, updating the app, and restarting your Roku device.

If a show will not play at all, use Issues playing shows and movies instead.

Tip: Before you try to fix a feature, make sure the app on your Roku device actually has it. Not every app has every feature. You can find your Roku device model and software version at Settings > System > About.

Why can't I find a feature in my streaming app?

Sometimes a feature is missing on purpose, not broken. Check these things first before you try to fix it:

  • Does the app have this feature on your Roku device? Not every app offers every feature on every device.
  • Does your plan include it? Some features need a certain subscription or add-on.
  • Does this show or profile have it? A feature like a different language or captions may be there for some user profiles and shows but not others.
  • Does it work on another device? Open the same app on your phone or another TV with the same account.

Is the problem with one show, the app, or your Roku device?

A few quick tests tell you where the problem is, so you know what to fix.

  • Try the feature on a different show in the same app.

  • Try it in another spot in the app.

  • If issues with captions, try a different app.

  • Try the same feature on another device, like your phone.

What this tells you:

  • If only one app has the problem, the app is most likely the cause. Follow the steps below, and see the app's own help if needed.
  • If every app has the problem, it is most likely your Roku device, your internet, or a setting on your Roku device.

Where do I turn captions on: in the app or in my Roku device settings?

Check both places. Most features live in the app's own settings. A few, like closed captions (CC), also have a setting on your Roku device. Some apps use their own captions and skip the setting on your Roku device.

  • While a show is playing, press the Starstar button on Roku remotebutton on your Roku remote. This opens the app's menu for captions, sound, and language.

  • For captions, you can also go to Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode on your Roku device.

  • If you change a setting on your Roku device but the app still looks different, use the app's own setting instead.

Note: Some settings, like sound language or captions, are saved per profile. If your settings keep resetting, make sure you are using the same profile each time.

General troubleshooting steps to try

If a feature still does not work after you check its settings, try these steps in order. Test the feature again after each one.

  • Update the streaming app. On the Home screen, point to the app, press the Starstar button on Roku remotebutton, and select Check for updates.

  • Update your Roku device. Go to Settings > System > Software update, then select Check now. Wait for the update to finish.

  • Restart the app. Highlight the app on the Home screen and press Starstar button on Roku remote> Restart.

  • Restart your Roku device.

    • On a Roku player, go to Settings > System > System restart.
    • On a Roku TV, go to Settings > System > Power > System restart.

You can also unplug your Roku device, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in.

  • Remove the app and add it again. Point to the app, press the Starstar button on Roku remotebutton, select Remove channel, and confirm. Restart your Roku device, then add the app again from the Roku Streaming Store.

Troubleshooting common features

Below are quick fixes for the features people ask about most. Find your problem, then try the fix.

Captions or subtitles will not turn on or stay on

Turn captions on inside the app while a show is playing. Press the Starstar button on Roku remote button and choose captions. Some apps use their own captions and skip the setting on your Roku device, so the caption setting on your Roku device may not change them. If captions still will not show, try the general troubleshooting steps above.

I have no sound or the wrong language

Open the app's sound menu (press Starstar button on Roku remote during a show) and pick the sound track and language you want. If a show is missing surround sound, press Home  then go to Settings > Audio > Audio mode > Stereo on your Roku device, and check that the show offers surround sound. If there is no sound at all, test another app to see if it is a problem with your Roku device.

I can't find, switch, or change a profile

Make sure you are on the right profile. Profiles are managed inside the app, not in your Roku device settings. If some shows are hidden, check whether parental controls are turned on for that profile.

Autoplay or the next episode is not working

Turn autoplay ON or OFF in the app's play settings. Roku does not control autoplay, so this setting lives inside each app. You can usually find this setting under Settings, your profile picture, or a gear icon within the app.

I can't sign in, or the app keeps signing me out

Sign in again using the app's code or on-screen steps. Check if your subscription is active. You should also confirm if your Roku device is using the same email address as your app account by going to Settings > System > About. If it keeps signing you out, try the general troubleshooting steps above.

When should I contact the app or Roku Support?

Contact the streaming app (like Netflix, Disney+, Max, or Paramount+) when the problem is only in that app, such as:

  • Missing or wrong shows
  • Captions or sound only in that app
  • Sign-in issues
  • Playback issues

You can find app help links in the streaming services contact list, or contact Roku Support.
