Common questions about Roku OLED TVs

This article answers the most common questions about Roku OLED TVs. It explains what is normal, how OLED looks different from Roku QLED TVs, and simple habits that help you enjoy your TV.

Note: You can confirm you have a Roku-branded OLED TV by checking Settings > System > About for your model number, then reviewing Roku branded TV product information.

What makes an OLED TV different from other TVs?

Roku makes both OLED and LED TVs. Both show a great picture, but they each look their best in different ways. Here is what you would notice at home.

With an OLED TV, you would see:

  • Very deep, true black. Dark movie scenes look rich, and you can still see small details in the shadows.
  • The best picture in a dark or dim room, like a home theater.
  • A good picture even when you sit off to the side, not just straight in front.
  • A very thin and light TV.

With a LED TV, you would see:

  • A brighter picture that holds up well in a bright, sunny room.
  • Strong, punchy color.

Which one is right for you?

  • Pick an OLED TV if you watch a lot of movies or shows in a dark or dim room and you want the deepest black and best contrast.
  • Pick a LED TV if your room gets a lot of light.

Why does my Roku OLED TV screen look wavy when it is off?

If your OLED TV screen looks wavy or bent when the TV is off, this is normal. The TV is not broken.

Why this happens: An OLED TV does not have a light behind the screen like other TVs do. This lets the screen be very thin. When the TV is off, the thin screen can reflect the room a little like a funhouse mirror, so things around you may look wavy or bent.

If you still need help: If you see waves or bends while the TV is on and playing video, that is different. Contact Roku Support.

What is burn-in, and should I worry about it?

What causes burn-in: Burn-in can happen when the same still image stays on the screen for long periods of time. Think of a channel logo, a news bar at the bottom of the screen, or a video game status bar that never moves. After many hours, that one spot can wear a little differently than the rest of the screen and leave a faint mark.

Should you worry? For most people, the answer is no. It usually takes months of showing the same still picture, day after day, for burn-in to happen. Normal watching, like movies, shows, and sports, keeps the picture moving.

You are more likely to notice this issue if you leave a paused game or a news channel with a logo on the screen for many hours every day.

Image retention vs. burn-in

Temporary image retention is normal with an OLED TV. This is a faint ghost image after a still picture, but it will fade after you watch something else.

How to prevent burn-in

Follow these simple steps to keep your picture looking its best:

  • Watch different kinds of shows. Movies, TV shows, and sports keep the picture changing, which is good for the screen.
  • Do not leave a still picture on for hours. A few minutes on the home screen is fine. Exit the screen when you are done and avoid leaving shows, movies, or games on pause for hours at a time.
  • Turn the brightness down when you watch a news channel with a logo or play a game with a fixed overlay for a long time.

Why does my Roku OLED TV picture look dimmer?

This is normal and intentional. Roku OLED TVs come set to a Low Power picture mode by default on every input (streaming, Live TV, and HDMI devices) to protect the OLED panel and help prevent burn-in.

You can change the picture setting at any time if you prefer a brighter image:

  • Press the Star (*) button on your remote while watching, or go to Settings > TV picture settings.
  • Choose Roku Smart Picture Max.

If you still need help, contact Roku Support.

Why does my Roku OLED TV go black for a few minutes, or say "Your screen needs refreshing"?

This is normal. Your Roku OLED TV runs an automatic screen refresh to keep the picture looking its best and to help prevent burn-in.

  • After you have watched for a while, when you turn the TV off the screen may stay black for about 5 to 6 minutes before it fully powers down. This is a short refresh running in the background.
  • Now and then you may see a message that says "Your screen needs refreshing." You can choose to refresh now or skip it. If you do nothing, the refresh starts on its own after a few seconds.
  • You may still hear button sounds or audio while the screen is black. That is expected.
  • Once in a while the TV runs a longer refresh, which only takes a few minutes.

What to do:

  • Let the refresh finish. Do not unplug the TV while the screen is refreshing.
  • To stop a refresh, press the Power button on your remote or TV to turn the screen back on.

How to prevent physical damage

Your Roku OLED TV is very thin, and the top edge is the most delicate part. Handle it gently and clean it the safe way with these simple tips:

  • Hold the TV by the sides and the bottom. Do not touch or press on the screen, and be extra gentle along the thin top edge.
  • Never press hard on the screen. Pushing on an OLED screen can leave a permanent mark or damage it.
  • Wipe smudges and fingerprints with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Wipe gently in straight lines, not circles, and do not press hard.
  • If a smudge will not come off: lightly dampen the cloth with a little water and wring it until it is almost dry. Never spray water or cleaner right onto the screen.

Can I use Backdrops on my Roku OLED TV?

Yes. Roku Backdrops works on Roku TVs, including OLED models. For the best experience on OLED, let images rotate and avoid showing one picture.

  • Open Backdrops.
  • Select Settings.

  • Choose Backdrops preferences.
  • Set Image duration to any option exceptDon't change, so the picture changes instead of staying still.

  • Set a Daily stop time, so Backdrops turns off on its own each day.

Is an OLED TV good for gaming?

Yes. OLED TVs have an extremely fast response time, far quicker than most LED TVs. That near-instant response keeps fast-moving action crisp with little to no motion blur, while OLED's deep, true blacks make it easier to pick out details in dark scenes.

Tips for gaming on OLED:

  • Do not leave a paused game or menu on the screen for hours.
  • After a long gaming session, turn the TV off with the remote.
