What to do if your Roku streaming player will not power on

If your Roku® streaming player won’t turn on, here’s how to figure out what’s wrong and get it working again.

What to do if your Roku player won't power on

  • Check the status light

Look at the light on the front of your Roku device:

    • No light at all: It may not be getting power.
    • White light is on, but no picture: Your Roku is on—check your TV’s input.
    • Solid red light: Your device is too hot. Unplug it and let it cool.
    • Flashing red light: It's not getting enough power. Plug it into a wall outlet.
  • If using a wall outlet

    • Use the right power adapter: We strongly recommend using the one that came with your Roku player.
    • Reconnect the power cable: Unplug it, then plug it back in.
    • Try a different wall outlet: Your outlet may not work. Test with another device to be sure.
    • Avoid power strips: Plug directly into the wall for a more reliable power source.
    • Still no power: Your adapter might be faulty. If your device is under warranty, contact Roku support. You can also purchase an adapter in the accessories store
  • If using your TV's USB port

Some Roku players can be powered through a TV’s USB port, but not all TVs provide enough power.

    • Use the original USB cable: Other cables may not provide the right connection.
    • Reconnect the USB cable: Make sure both ends are plugged in firmly.
    • Try a different USB port on your TV: Power levels can vary between ports.
    • Test with another TV: This can help you tell if the issue is the player or the TV.
    • Try using a wall outlet instead: This is the most reliable way to power your Roku player.

Note: The USB port on some TVs may be unable to power a Roku device. If you see the on-screen warning message that appears in these cases, use a 5V 1A USB power adaptor and connect to a wall outlet.
