How to change, upgrade, or downgrade your subscription plan through Roku

If you signed up for a streaming app through the Roku Channel with Roku Pay, you can change plans directly from your Roku account to plan switch between different subscriptions. You do not need to cancel and resubscribe.

This article applies only to Roku Channel app subscriptions with Roku Pay. To confirm you are billed through Roku, go to my.roku.com/subscriptions. Subscriptions appear there. If you signed up directly with the streaming service, you must change plans on the service's own website or app.

How do I change, upgrade, or downgrade my subscription plan?

Go to my.roku.com/subscriptions, open the subscription you want to change, and select Change Plan. If the Change Plan option appears, you can switch directly through Roku.

On the Roku website

  • Sign in to my.roku.com/subscriptions

  • Under Active subscriptions, select the subscription you want to change

  • Select Change Plan

    • You will be taken to that streaming service's page on The Roku Channel with your available plans shown.
  • Choose your new plan and select Confirm

On your Roku device

  • Press the Home home-with-white.jpg button on your Roku remote

  • Highlight the streaming app for the subscription you want to change and press the Star star button on Roku remote button

  • Select Manage subscription, then Change Plan

  • Enter your Roku PIN if you've set a PIN for subscriptions and purchases.

  • Choose your new plan and select Confirm

If you signed up directly with the streaming service (not through Roku), you cannot change plans through Roku. Contact the service directly or see the list of streaming service support websites.

How is plan switching handled?

  • For plan switches that unlock new values to the user, the plan switch will happen immediately. Roku cancels your current subscription, calculates a credit for any unused time, applies that credit to the new plan's charge, and charges you the difference. Future renewals happen at the new plan's price.
  • For plan switches that do not add additional value (or even remove some value), the change will occur at the next billing cycle. The change will occur at the start of the next billing cycle. On your next renewal date, your subscription switches to the new (lower-cost) plan, and you are charged the new price.
  • You already have a pending plan switch. Your next plan change is scheduled for the end of your current billing cycle. You can still switch to a different plan, but the new switch will replace the pending one.

Roku decides whether a change is an upgrade or a downgrade based on three factors:

  • Providers included - Adding a service (for example, moving from a single subscription to a bundle) is an upgrade. Removing a service is a downgrade.
  • Tier - Moving to a plan with more content, higher quality, or ad-free viewing is an upgrade. Moving to a lower tier is a downgrade.
  • Billing cadence - Moving from monthly to annual is an upgrade. Moving from annual to monthly is a downgrade.

Why don't I see a "Change Plan" option for my subscription?

Plan switching is available for subscriptions purchased through The Roku Channel. You will not see Change Plan if any of these apply:

  • The streaming service does not offer other plans through Roku. Some services have only a single plan available through Roku Pay. Any plan changes must be made with the service directly.
  • Your subscription(s) are on hold due to a billing issue. Update your payment method to bring your subscription back to good standing, then try again.
  • The new plan's cost is lower than the prorated credit from your current plan. Roku does not offer plan changes that would result in leftover credit after the plan switch.

Can I switch from a single subscription to a bundle?

Yes, if a bundle is available that includes your current service. Bundles combine two streaming services into a single subscription, often at a lower price than subscribing to each separately.

When you switch from a single subscription to a bundle that includes it:

  • Your existing single-service subscription is automatically cancelled and replaced by the new bundle subscription.

  • You are not charged twice for the same service.
  • Before you confirm, you will see a message telling you that your existing subscription will be cancelled and replaced by the bundle.

Bundle offers appear on the streaming service's page on your Roku device or on The Roku Channel website. You can also switch plans by going to my.roku.com/subscriptions and selecting the Switch Plans button for that subscription.

Can I switch from a bundle back to a single subscription?

Yes, if that option is available for your bundle on my.roku.com/subscriptions. Follow the steps above to change your plan and select the single-service option. This is a downgrade which means you will keep the bundle until the end of your billing cycle, then switch to the single subscription at renewal.

If Change Plan does not offer a single-service option for your bundle, you can cancel the bundle and subscribe to the individual service separately. See Manage or cancel subscriptions on Roku.

Can I remove one service from my bundle and keep the other?

To keep only one service:

  • Navigate to my.roku.com/subscriptions

  • Select Switch Plans next to the bundle you want to change and choose a the new plan you want to keep as an individual subscription

What happens to my free trial when I switch plans?

Free trials do not carry over between plans. If you switch plans while on a free trial, the free trial ends, and you are charged for your new plan. Roku does not carry forward your free trial when you switch plans.

Will I get a refund or credit when I switch plans?

When you upgrade, Roku calculates a prorated credit based on the unused portion of your current plan and applies it to the first charge on your new plan. You will see the credit and the new charge reflected in the amount you are billed.

When you downgrade, no credit or refund is issued; you continue using your current plan until the end of your billing cycle, then the new (lower-cost) plan starts.

Roku does not carry credit balances between plans on a Roku account. If a plan change would leave a credit balance, the switch is not offered.

How do I see my recent plan changes?

Go to my.roku.com/payment/purchases to see your transaction history. Each plan change shows:

  • The date the plan change happened.
  • The old plan and the new plan.
  • Any prorated credit that was applied.
  • The amount charged for the new plan.

If you have more than one subscription on the same channel, they all share one payment date. When you add a new one, you pay a small partial amount to catch it up to that date. After that, all your subscriptions renew on the same day, and you pay for them together in one charge.
