Two-way audio uses the microphone and speaker built into your Roku® Smart Home camera or video doorbell to act as an intercom, letting you easily talk to visitors from the indoor safety of your home, scare away pesky critters from your yard, and give trespassers a stern warning. This article provides more details about the feature and explains how easy it is to use two-way audio.
How to use two-way audio
Two-way audio uses the speak and sound features in the Roku Smart Home mobile app for iOS® and Android™ to send and receive audio. The speak feature records sound from the microphone on your mobile device and plays it through the speaker on your smart home camera or video doorbell. The speaker volume on your smart home device cannot be changed. The sound feature records from the microphone on your smart home device and plays it back on your mobile device. You can adjust the playback volume on your mobile device with the volume up and down buttons.
Follow the steps below to open the live video stream and use two-way audio.
- Tap Home
from the navigation bar - Select your camera or doorbell
- Tap Speak
to use two-way audio. The sound feature will turn on automatically. - When you are done, tap Speak again to turn off both the Speak and Sound features.
When you are using two-way audio correctly, both the Sound and Speak icons should appear as seen below.

You can toggle both features on and off by tapping each icon. They are purple when active and light gray when muted.
If you need something louder to get the attention of an unwelcome visitor, learn how to use the siren feature on your camera.
Why is the microphone not working?
The Roku Smart Home app requires permission to send and receive audio in order to use the two-way audio feature. Refer to the Apple or Google support websites for assistance enabling permissions on your mobile device.
