How to use the 'TV Off' shortcut and control your TV with a Roku streaming player

You can turn off your TV from your Roku Home screen using the "TV Off" shortcut. This guide explains how to set it up and solve issues you may experience.

Set up

  • Plug your Roku player into an HDMI port on your TV. If your player uses a cable, make sure you connect it to your TV with a High-Speed HDMI cable.
  • Enable 1-Touch Play: Press Home, then go to Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC). Turn on 1-Touch Play and TV Power. These settings allow your Roku player to turn off your TV and adjust volume, including when you use the Roku Mobile App.

  • Turn on CEC on your TV. CEC names vary by brand and may be in System or Advanced Settings. If you do not see a setting labeled CEC, see this article for further help. You can also look up your TV model online or check the manual. Contact the manufacturer for additional assistance.

Using your Roku player to control TV power and volume

You can control your TV two ways:

Using the Roku Voice Remote

  • Press Home home-with-white.jpg on your Roku remote
  • Scroll and select Settings
  • Select Devices > Remotes
  • Proceed through the "Control TV" setup flow
  • Press Power to turn the TV off
  • Press volume buttons to change volume. This method controls the TV directly through the Roku remote.

Using the Roku Mobile App:

  • Press Home home-with-white.jpg on your Roku remote
  • Scroll and select Settings
  • Select System > Control Other Devices (CEC)
  • Select TV Power and TV Volume
  • When music starts playing, select Yes, music is playing.
  • When prompted, use the Roku remote volume buttons; if the volume changes, select Yes again.
  • Tap the power button in the Roku Mobile App to turn the TV off.
  • Use the volume controls in the app to change the TV volume. This method sends commands through your Roku player using HDMI-CEC, not infrared.

Turning on your TV with your Roku player

Most TVs turn on and switch to the Roku player input when you press any button on the Roku remote (except volume or mute) if 1-Touch Play is on and CEC is enabled on the TV. In order for the mobile app to power on the TV, the Roku player needs to be powered on. The best way to guarantee this is to plug your player directly into the wall.

Troubleshooting

If you can’t control the TV with your Roku player try the following steps:

  • You are using a High-Speed HDMI cable
  • Your Roku player is connected directly to your TV (bypass soundbars/receivers to test)
  • 1-Touch Play, TV Power, and TV Volume are enabled in the Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC) menu
  • Make sure CEC is turned on in your TV’s settings. The exact steps vary by TV manufacturer, so check your TV’s settings or follow the instructions in the CEC setup guide.

What to do if the Roku Mobile App isn’t controlling the TV

  • Make sure your app is up to date. Open your phone’s app store (App Store on iOS or Google Play Store on Android), search for “Roku,” select the Roku app from the results, and tap Update if available.
