What is Amazon Instant Video on Roku?

Amazon Instant Video is a Roku channel that makes it easy to buy or rent hit movies and TV shows from the Amazon Instant Video store, right from the comfort of your couch. More than 75,000 movies and TV shows are available on Amazon Instant Video. No monthly subscription fee is required to buy or rent movies.

If you have an Amazon Prime membership, you can also access Amazon Prime instant videos directly from the Amazon Instant Video channel. Amazon Prime instant videos provide unlimited, instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows at no additional cost with a $79 annual Amazon Prime membership, which also includes fast shipping along with other benefits. All Amazon Prime movies and TV shows are commercial-free and some are available in HD.

NOTE:  Not all movies and TV shows available for rental or purchase in Amazon Video on demand are available as part of Amazon Print Instant Video

What do I need to use the Amazon Instant Video channel on my Roku player?

To use Amazon Video Instant Video on your Roku player, do the following

  • Register your Roku player at
  • You will be asked to select "purchase PIN" as part of the registration process. You will need this purchase PIN later to complete Amazon transactions on your Roku player.
  • From the Roku home screen, select Amazon Instant Video and start browsing titles.

Tip: You can browse Amazon Instant Video without an Amazon account. When you are ready to make a purchase, follow the on-screen instructions to register your Roku player with Amazon and complete the transaction.

How do I sign up for Amazon Prime to get access to Amazon Prime Instant videos in the Amazon Instant Video channel?

To watch Amazon Prime instant videos, you must be a member of Amazon Prime.  Amazon Prime is a membership program that gives you unlimited fast shipping on all eligible purchases for an annual membership fee of $79. Amazon Prime members also get unlimited, commercial-free, and instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows.

If you are not an Amazon Prime member, you can try an Amazon Prime membership by starting a free trial (restrictions apply) by following these steps:

  • From a Web browser, go to
  • Click the “start your one month free trial” button on the right hand side of the page.
  • Sign in with your account. If you do not have an account you will be asked to create one.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are already an Amazon Prime member, you automatically get unlimited streaming access to thousands of movies and TV shows with your membership.

Note: Prime instant videos are not included with the free shipping benefits provided by Amazon Mom, Amazon Student, or if you are a guest of an Amazon Prime member

Where can I find my Amazon Prime instant videos in the Amazon Instant Video channel?

If your Amazon account is associated with an eligible Amazon Prime account, an icon for “Prime Instant Videos” will automatically appear on the main screen of the Amazon Instant Video channel next to the “Search” icon. Additionally, Amazon Prime instant videos can be identified in the movie and TV rental sections by a price option that reads “Prime Members $0.00”.

Don’t forget: Rented videos will be removed from your library automatically as soon as they expire. Your rental timer (typically 24-hours) starts the minute you select “Watch Online.”

How can I tell if a movie or TV show in the Amazon Instant Video channel is Amazon Prime eligible and can be streamed at no additional cost with my Amazon Prime subscription?

Not all movies available for rent in the Amazon Instant Video channel are available to stream at no additional cost as part of an Amazon Prime subscription. Movies and TV shows included with Amazon Prime are clearly identified on the video details page. Instead of buttons that read “Rent movie in HD for…” and “Rent movie in SD for…” you’ll see a button that reads “Play – unlimited streaming with Prime.”
