What is Play on Roku?

This article is applicable to the following models:

 Models All Roku player and TV models

Except: Roku classic models
Roku N1000, N1050, N1100, N1101
Roku 2000, 2050, 2100



Play on Roku is a feature of Roku’s iOS, Android, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 mobile apps that enables you to enjoy your mobile device’s photos and music on your Roku device.

Additionally, the Play on Roku feature also enables you to play videos taken with your mobile device on your TV.


Select devices support this feature including:


Apple iOS

The Roku iOS app can be used on these Apple devices:

  • iPhone 3GS and later
  • iPod Touch 2nd generation and later
  • iPad

You can use the Roku app on any generation of iPad. However, at this time, we do not offer an iPad-optimized version of the Roku iOS app.

Apple devices need to have iOS version 4.3 or higher installed.

The Roku Android app can be used on these devices:

  • Samsung Galaxy S III
  • Samsung Galaxy S IV
  • Samsung Galaxy S2
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 2
  • Motorola Moto X
  • HTC One
  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 5
  • Google Nexus 7 (2012)
  • Google Nexus 7 (2013)

Note: Video playback requires Roku software version 5.1 or later.

The Roku Windows app is compatible with any tablet or PC running Windows 8.1, and any mobile device running Windows Phone 8.1. Play on Roku is limited to photos and music in the Windows app.  Video playback is not supported.
